Our Mission

Promoting Human Rights, Inclusivity, and Holistic Security

At Inclusive Learning Space, our mission is clear: to empower individuals and organizations with the knowledge and skills needed to address critical issues that impact society. We’re committed to driving change in the areas of human rights, gender discrimination, LGBTIQ+ rights, holistic security, digital protection, physical safety, psychosocial wellbeing, and professional development.

Research & Advocacy

Inclusive Learning Space Regional Protection Coordinators conduct research field missions throughout the year, visiting and meeting human rights defenders at risk, following up with grantees and those on whose behalf Inclusive Learning Space (ILS) has conducted advocacy, as well as assessing changing risk environments for HRDs.

Field missions allow ILS Protection Coordinators to engage with HRDs directly and to observe the environment in which they are working and to identify those most at risk.  For each region – the Americas; Europe & Central Asia; Africa; Middle East & North Africa; and Asia, ILS maintains one Protection Coordinator and support staff in the Dublin office.

Inclusive Learning Space advocates on behalf of individual HRDs with individual governments, regional intergovernmental bodies and international intergovernmental institutions.  Aside from the Urgent Appeal process and the casework of the EU Office in Brussels, ILS meets regularly with relevant government ministries when on in-country visits; holds meetings with diplomatic representations in Dublin, London, Brussels and Geneva; and provides regular briefings to the Irish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other governments willing to take action to support HRDs at risk.

Inclusive Learning Space has initiated an effort to identify and support interested governments in each region to take a stronger position on HRDs in international fora and to actively support HRDs on a regional level among their neighbors.

Professional Development

In addition to the participatory approach, the program familiarizes participants with the human rights-based approach, the gender perspective and the systems approach. The participants acquire and develop tools for improving the effectiveness and the concrete impact of their work. The IHRTP helps participants transform their working methods by making them more inclusive and participatory.

Human Rights

Inclusive Learning Space recognizes human rights defenders working to protect and defend any and all of the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, as well as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

Violations & Repression

Human rights defenders face numerous forms of repression and efforts to stop their work. The fact that governments and non-governmental actors around the world continue to focus repression on human rights defenders is a tribute to their importance in the struggle for justice and accountability.

Networking

The International Human Rights Training Program is an opportunity for participants to meet other committed individuals who, like them, are leaders working for change in their communities. By taking part in the training, the participants become members of a community of practice allowing them to network with former participants and experts and to share tools and resources online.

Expertise and international recognitions

ILS has more than 50 years of experience in human rights education. The quality of our prize-winning work has been recognized in Canada and abroad. In addition to having trained several world leaders in human rights, ILS has an ongoing working relationship with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
